‘Remarkable Progress’ at UAE’s Wesgreen
With a reputation for providing world-class education, GEMS’ Wesgreen International School has always prioritised literacy learning. Engaging Lexonik was part of its vision to ensure its diverse school community could get the best possible experience…and outcomes.
Wesgreen is such a successful and interesting UAE school, Roxanne. What can you tell us about its approach, specifically on literacy?
GEMS Wesgreen International School has always placed strong emphasis on reading and literacy, investing significantly in these areas. These remain not only among our top priorities but also key drivers of our students' success.
How did you come to learn about Lexonik?
We became aware of Lexonik through workshops and seminars conducted in the UAE, supported by positive word-of-mouth recommendations from other schools.
What was it that subsequently prompted you to find out more about reading interventions?
As a school that takes pride in developing student growth, we sought a programme that would align with our vision for every child to access the curriculum and thrive within it.
We felt that the reading interventions offered by Lexonik were an ideal match for our needs.
And what made you decide that Lexonik was right for you?
The delivery model of Lexonik is clear and concise, promising measurable gains within just a six-week cycle.
It presented a short yet impactful intervention that we could readily integrate into our support framework for students.
How did implementation take place?
We began by selecting existing staff members to deliver the lessons. From there, the process was straightforward, with Lexonik representatives providing seamless guidance.
Lexonik lessons were timetabled into staff schedules, with the Inclusion Team placing a specific focus on these lessons.
Additionally, other trained staff outside the Inclusion Team incorporated intervention lessons into their timetables.
It sounds like it was really planned – and seamless.
How have you found the ongoing support of Lexonik?
The support from Lexonik has been exceptional—helpful and responsive.
We are particularly grateful to our Account Manager, Gavin, as well as Kate and Phil, who are always willing to assist at a moment’s notice.
The online webinars have also proven invaluable for our team.
What were the first impressions of your staff and students in school?
Initially, there was some hesitation, as staff felt it might be just another programme being introduced.
However, once the data was analysed and the gains highlighted, their outlook changed, and they were genuinely impressed.
How many staff did you train?
We currently have five staff members trained in Lexonik Leap and seven trained in Lexonik Advance.
What results have you seen so far?
The Lexonik Advance and Lexonik Leap programmes have had a remarkable positive impact on students' academic development.
- Lexonik Advance: After a 6-week period, 35% of students improved their Standard Age Scores (SAS), with significant enhancements in Stanine levels and reading ages.
Some students achieved remarkable progress, advancing their reading age by more than two years.
Additionally, 20% of students exceeded expected learning progress, highlighting the programme’s ability to accelerate academic performance while ensuring consistent progress for the majority.
- Lexonik Leap: This programme provided essential support for students facing greater learning challenges.
Within five weeks, 30 percent of students improved their SAS, and 20% enhanced their reading ages.
As many as 70 percent of students maintained stable academic performance, demonstrating the programme’s value in creating incremental growth, particularly for those with special educational needs (SEN).
Both programmes have proven highly effective in improving literacy and learning outcomes, affirming their role as essential tools for educational advancement.
And what next?
We aim to continue offering Lexonik interventions in the school and anticipate seeing even more students benefit from the programme in the future.
What would you say to any school leader considering Lexonik?
It is definitely worth exploring for your school.
We recommend conducting a pilot study, as we did, and allowing the results to speak for themselves.
We now have parents requesting their children’s inclusion in the programme, which is an excellent step towards developing and enhancing an inclusive ethos in your school.
